Poser Bubble Over my Head

I think vintage style hair is pretty, and feminine. After watching a bunch of hair tutorials on vintage styles.  The one thing that I have noticed is that in order to get the look it takes a long time, at least by todays standards, oh mine anyway. Pin curls take quite a while to do, then you should really sleep on them. Even with a curling iron doing one inch sections of your hair and securing each curl take a bit of time. Well, for me who is truly curling iron challenged it took  like 45 min of my time and then I was only able to get half of my head to work. So vintage style hair is quite a bit of work.

I would love to have Betty bangs, do the perfect pin curl brush out, and make victory rolls that stay. Not only am I challenged with technique I am also a bit scared to actually wear it out of the house. I am afraid that there is a little cartoon bubble over my head with “POSER” in it following me every where. Friday I did wear a bandanna to work with an up-do that was vintage inspired. Of course someone noticed and asked if I was trying for a Chola look or for Rosie the Riveter look. I gave a deep sigh and said that it was a vintage look. I was then asked why? There is no why just like there is no and then. I wanted to, was the snappy comeback that I had.

So I guess I do have that poser bubble after all. I wonder if it changes colors to go with my outfit for the day. You would think that at 40 I would be so over that “what everyone things about me” bullshit… sadly I am not. Most days I don’t  let it bother me but for some reason this whole vintage style is something that I am not willing to commit to, because of what everyone else will think. I guess what I will have to do is at least once a week do something that I feel is vintage to my hair. I already do my makeup with a wing liner and the right colors. I love this look, have for a quite a while now. I am able to embrace the make up but why is the hair so hard for me? This weeks look will be an up-do with some sort of big bangs. Maybe I will even get brave and try a victory roll.

What have you changed that you had to start doing it slowly? Did it work? What did people around you think about the change?

On a quest for the perfect…

Hair products that I can use. I have posted about this in the past here but yet some how I am still looking for just the right thing to make my curly hair not all crazy and frizzy.

Every time I try something new it is a waste of $$ and makes my allergies unhappy. So I have pretty much given up on this and will make peace with ponytail holders for days that it is just crazy. Well that was until a while back in my YouTube video list there was a new video about using hand lotion to control your hair, mostly static and flyways. I was interested in this very much so. I have spent probably just as much money on lotion as I have on hair product trying to fine one that I can use with out, complications. But I have found some lotion that I can use so, if it would work for my hair then I will be a happy camper. It sorta works but it doesn’t last for very long. So I have to redo it. That is not so bad. I have used it a few time with some success.

Today I was looking for a bit more “hold” so I tried “un-petroleum jelly” why not it is not that much different from “Tres Flores Three Flowers Brilliantine Pomade”, by the way the ingredients in there as listed on-line are Petroleum, Fragrance. I can not use anything that smells so this is out. I don’t think I really want to put petroleum products on my hair, but I wanted to see if it was something that I could use. As I stated when I started this post I am looking for something to tame some of the crazyness that I get.

It worked, I loved the way it “held” my curls. My hair was soft and shinny. I did some looking around on the web to see if there was anything out there as far as pros or cons about using this product as a hair product. Most of the info was negative stuff with regards to the use of plain old petroleum jelly, it can make your hair feel greasy and attracts dirt. Some went as far as to say that it can make your hair fall out from clogged hair follicles.

Now you have to understand the only reason I know anything about Tres Flores is thanks to my brother who used it for many years and may still use it, I will have to ask the next time I talk to him, so I am pretty sure that my hair will not fall out from using something like it. I just use a very small pea size amount rub it in to my finger tips on both hand and then smooth it over my hair, I make sure that I don’t get it on my scalp. I don’t use it every day and I have not noticed that my hair is any dirtier then when I was using nothing on it.
