Crochet Review- Crochet Octopus by tjw1963

With the new year starting and the gift giving and making frenzy over for another year, I wanted to try something new here at Justalittlesnarky. A little background on me, I have been crocheting for years now, shall we say about 30 plus years now that is a lot of years. Dang that makes me old I think. Anyway I would say that my skill level is somewhere between intermediate and expert due to long periods of no crocheting for me.

I am going to do an ongoing series of reviews of tutorials that I find online. I’m planning to do a few a month, how it will work is I will make the project then give my thoughts on how well the project was shown in the tutorial. I hope this will inspire others to try out some of these projects. There are some really talented folks that share these projects with us.

This was the first project that I have completed by following Teresa’s videos. I first stumbled across her videos while looking at a simple flower pattern. Over the Christmas holiday I started crocheting again for gifts that we were giving, when I saw this cute pattern I just had to make one. It was such an urgent need that i had to fill that I was willing to “frog” a badly knitted sweater that I made but never wore. It was Christmas eve and everything was closed.

The instructions are very clearly explained as she works the pattern for you. Each step is explained in detail. She makes sure that you understand everything that she is doing for each round.

Overall the pattern is simple and works up pretty quickly. It took me 3 days to make my first one. Keep in mind that it was 3 days filled with family events due to holiday’s. The only part of the whole process that was tedious was making the legs after all you have to make 8 of them, but as she points out you can make as many or as few as you want. It is all up to your creativity.

The construction of the final product was well explained as well as demonstrated as we went along. The purple one in the photo has legs that were left hollow. The smaller yellow one has chenille stems in them so that they are positional. This would not work if this item was being made for a small child.

I would give this tutorial a giant thumbs up. I feel that even someone with basic crocheting skills would be able to have a successful outcome. Teresa also has a video with left-handed instructions, which I think makes her just awesome.

At the time this was published I was unable to find a link to written instructions. I had to watch it a few times pausing to do what she was showing a few times to finish it. If I can find them i will add a link to this post.

I would love to see photos if you make one of these cute creatures. You can find me on Twitter @justalilsnarky, if you have photos to share.

Till next time, get out there and craft something.

Completion- My One Word for 2013

I have to thank Twitter again for being a place to find cool things. This time it is OneWord365 there is no need for a long list of thing I have to do with the coming of the New Year. This list would be long, lose weight, drink less coffee, eat more salads, make time for the important things in life, learn a new skill, read 52 books. You get the idea, but they never last past the 15th of January so most years I don’t bother with them. The one word resonated with me, I can do that I can pick one word.

So I started thinking about this last week when I saw someone tweeted a link. All of the words that I kept coming up with had a negative feel to them. I had a whole list of them but they didn’t really say that I was looking for this year. Until today when I came up with Completion, that was the word it was perfect. I have always been really good a starting things I have never been all that good at finishing things.

That is other than in the month of November, for some reason I have no problem with completing NaNoWriMo. 50,000 words in 30 day for no particular reason other than I can. I have participated in 4 “winning” 3 of them. The one year that I didn’t win was due to a death in the family. For some reason I have no problem with sleepless nights to type thousands of words that will never see the light of day, but other projects are stored in boxed half done. I don’t really understand why they are different then the novel that no one is ever going to read.

So this years word is Completion!

What is your word?

A step closer but not quite there yet, NaNoWriMo helped

I do not consider myself a writer. Sure I write and I enjoy writing. Sometimes It feels like I may just expire if i don’t put pen to paper. Look I’m doing it now, but in my mind a writer is someone who has been published (even self published counts, now). I know that this is really not a hard and fast rule. I feel that you have to I guess suffer both the lows of the reflection process and the highs of finally making it, before you can wear the moniker writer.

As I have yet to produce anything that I feel strong enough about to put myself out there. I just dabble in the art of writing. I write stuff that I want to write and post them on my blogs where some of the content is to never be seen by anyone. I do get support from the communities that I sit on the fringe of, still not fully engaging them I need to work on that.

This year with NaNoWriMo is the first time that I took a step closer calling myself a writer. I have a story this time that I think I could see myself finishing, putting in the effort to take it to the next steps. I say this with a huge amount of trepidation, I’m afraid that I will scare it away.

While NaNo didn’t go as planned. Do they ever? This one was particularly filled with procrastination, until the last week where I cranked out 31,640 in just 7 days. My hands are still pretty jacked up from all the typing. But I did make it I won NaNoWriMo ’12 at like 7:30 my time. So yeah for that, there were times that I was so over it all in that last week.

The really cool thing about NaNo is that it seems to lead me to finding awesome new people, specifically in Twitter. This year is no different in that regard. That is one thing I’m always in awe of, how many people participate and how diverse they are. This years winner of the most motivational for me were:

@DJPimpDaddy who just randomly (from what I can tell) responded to a tweet about possibly not finishing. He hung in there with me cheering me on to the end. And exposed me to @LNSteamer and that crazy group. Congrats and thank you for engaging with me.

@WritersPodcast they were doing a series on NaNo which were great to listen to. They put on a great show, anyway NaNo was just timely.

There were many others who were all in my corner this year and to them I would like to say THANK YOU!

My DH and DS are in a special thank you group. They are the ones who had to deal with my mad rush at the end that lead to weird dinners and late night sessions. Dirty dishes in the sink and a sleep deprived zombie to deal with. If there were survivor medals for those who have to deal with a NaNoer they would be receiving one.

I procrastinate every year. This was the worst that I have been behind starting the last week in the 4 years that I have won. For some reason this story needed to be written. It took a turn that I think is the real story. I ‘m going to step back then finish it up. I have some unanswered questions that I need to sort out to make it a stronger story I hope. The fact that I don’t just want to forget all about it shows that I am moving closer to being able to call myself a writer.

Did you participate in the craziness that is NaNoWriMo? If so how did you do? Even if you didn’t hit the 50k you still started something see where it can take you.
